Hospitalist A seen a patient late in the evening in the emergency room and placed them under inpatient status but due to unavailability of inpatient beds the patient was not moved to the floor but had to wait in an emergency room. On the morning of day two the patient was still in the emergency room and by this time a room became available in the pavilion. (The pavilion is owned and operated by the hospital just not attached to the main building) The patient was stable enough to be transferred to the pavilion so Hospitalist B discharged the patient from the emergency room to the pavilion. What should Hospitalist A and B bill if the patient has Medicare and what should be billed if the patient has commercial insurance? Any resources to support your answer would be appreciated.
