Hello,

Our outpatient practice has technicians performing our EEG/EMG/Dopplers. The physician will interpret the results. Currently we are billing on two separate lines; one with modifier TC and one with modifier 26. Is this correct?
We own the equipment, we are POS 11 and the technicians operate under MD supervision. Please advise.

Thank you.

Medicare has supervision requirements for the technical component of most diagnostic studies.

A technician does not meet Medicare's requirements for performing the technical component of needle EMG diagnostic testing. Medicare primarily only allows either physician personal performance or a PT certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) as a qualified electrophysiological clinical specialist and is permitted to provide the procedure under State law.

As for the other tests, you will need to check, I think many of the EEG studies are general physician supervision.
