When does ED coding stop? For example, if there is a patient who comes to the ED at 6am, admitted at 11am, and isn't transferred until 2pm. When does ED coding end, and inpatient begin...admission time or transfer time? Thanks for any help!!

that is very difficult! glad to hear some one else has the same problem. We generally use the time that the patient actually went to the med-surg floor. We capture everythnig possible on the ED encounter, though we are a critical access hospital and are allowed to bill seperately for the ED encounter where other general acute care hospitals cannot. Hope that helps.

Everyone may have a different opinion on this one....it tends to vary from hospital to hospital. I worked at a CAH as well for a while and we would use the time the nurses noted on the er nurse notes that the patient was transferred to the floor. If there was no notation, then we would use the time, date&sign, time that the provider writes on the admit order sheet. The place I work at now does the latter.
