We are receiving a denial stating for 33961 that is saying it is being billed without the appropriate add-on code. 33960 had been billed when the patient was first started on ECMO.

I see in the CPT book it is an add-on code and says the 2 should be billed together. It just does not seem right to bill the first 24 hrs AND each add'l 24 hrs EVERYDAY!

Does anyone have any experience with this?
 
They do not get billed together for each day the patient is on ECMO. The payer is denying 33961 due to it not being billed with the 33960 because they expect to see them billed on the same claim. We are having the same problem since a group of doctors take call for our ECMO patients so may all bill different dates for the same patient on different claims. We appeal referring to the claim procedure 33960 was billed on. Hope this helps.
