Does anyone know of a E/M tool that is helpful in determining level of care to use, where you can plug in info and it tells you what to use, rather than trying to guess?
Thank you!Yes, most EMR software does have a tool for E&M suggestions. And I agree with Sharon about not using it. Specifically, I think MDM is the hardest for EMRs to determine. Additionally, it is very easy to overdocument history with EMR buttons.
Don't forget that starting 2021, MDM only (or time) will be used to determine level. There will be a learning curve, but I think it will make things simpler in the long run.
I like the AMA chart https://www.ama-assn.org/system/files/2019-06/cpt-revised-mdm-grid.pdf
From my experience, I usually see students/new coders using some type of audit chart like this:
More experienced coders are counting the same thing, but in their head and not looking at a 6 page chart for every visit.
But again, this goes away for 2021.
