I was having a discussion with my boss this morning regarding E codes. There was some confusion on his part on whether we should be using these codes or not. I have always been taught that you apply an appropriate E code whenever it applies. However he really didn't seem to know anything about them and questioned whether it was necessary for the Optometry specialty. Does anyone know if Optometry is excluded from this I personally feel more comfortable applying the E code if we have someone with an injury from a fall, etc or any type of medication monitoring we do for high risk meds. Any help with this is appreciated.

yes you need them for injuries, and with ICD-10 the external cause codes become more important. Also if you read in the ICD-9 book at the beginning of the eye chapter there is an instructional note to add the E codes
