When a shave biopsy to a lesion is done, is it appropriate to wait for the pathology report or to put the diagnosis the dr has put before the path report is available? The shave bx need a covered dx and if we wait for the path report and it comes back malignant then the claims will be denied, but I always thought it was necessary for us to wait for the path report to come back and use that. Any help??

you must wait for a path report for an excision, you do not need to wait with a shave or bisopsy but you cannot use a 238.2 dx code as that dx must be rendered via a path report
