How would you code a sunburn as a drug side effect?

Patient seen for knee pain. The clinician indicated the patient got a sunburn as a side effect of taking Doxycycline in the HPI.

In the assessment he documented 1) knee pain, 2) drug side effect. How would you code this.

No abnormal findings documented on examination of the skin so I don't think 692.71 would be appropriate as it is not clear that this is a current condition, just that the medication caused sensitivity to the sun.

Right now I am looking at only 719.46 for the knee pain. Any other suggestions?

I think I would use an adverse effect code of the drug, because it includes hypersensitivity. You may consider using the 995.29. Hope this helps.

When you code for an adverse effect you need to code the adverse effect first such as the sunburn then use an E code which would indicated adverse effect in therapeutic use for that that drug. You will find this information in the guidelines for coding and reporting.
