We are currently reviewing our drug screen billing. It used to be so clear cut when we could use CPT codes 80100 & 80101. However, it's my understanding that CMS no longer pays 80100 and that not only did G0431 replace 80101 but that only 1 unit of G0431 is payable.

This is what we commonly perform when it comes to drug screens.

The emergency comprehensive drug screen starts in the Chemistry lab where the following eleven immunoassays are performed on the urine specimen:

Amphetamines, Barbiturate, Benzodiazepine, Cannabinoids, Cocaine, Methadone, Methaqualone, Opiates, Oxycodone, Phencyclidine, & Propoxyphene.

The urine is then sent to the Toxicology lab and a qualitative comprehensive multi-drug screen is performed by the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry methodology. Toxicology then performs the eleven immunoassays described above in addition to the following immunoassays:

Acetaminophen, Phenytoin, Ethanol, and Salicylate.

What is the most appropriate way to code these tests?
