We have a Dr who's practice is closing, Internal Medicine. Pt transfers to Family practice within the same Tax id. Because this is a different speciality, wouldn't the pt be new? CPT states "A new pt is one who has not rec'd any professional svcs frm the Physician or another physician of the SAME SPECIALTY who belongs to the SAME GROUP practice within the past 3 yrs." I say pt is new but am not getting favorable conversations. Thanks for your help.

check nppes first

As long as per the nppes registry one doctor is listed as family medicine and the other is internal medicine - these are different specialties therefore the patient could be considered new. However, be aware that the patients will probably complain about being billed as a new patient when they've been to the practice before.
