I am in an ortho clinic. We give out a lot of braces, etc. If it is documented in the office visit that XXX brace was dispensed to patient, is that sufficient? Or does there need to be a literal order placed for that brace?
depends on the payer, like for Medicare that is definitely not enough. Documentation needs to say why the brace is medically necessary and hopefully be enough to match up with coverage guidelines in the LCD for that HCPCS code. Just saying you gave the patient a brace and not specifying why is not going to be sufficient.
If the patient is Medicare, you will also have to consider if an ABN form is necessary.
