Does anyone know the guidelines on dilating during a procedure, ie; the physician cannot pass the scope through the GE junction and has to dilate, or during a cytoscopy the physician cannot pass through the urethra and has to dilate. Would this be a separate charge or considered part of the procedure? Thank You:p

I just read something about this the day before yesterday (and of course, I can't find it now to show you) but it does say that you can NOT code for that in addition to the primary procedure. If I come across the info again, I will share it...

One does need to watch the CCI edits on these codes. I have urologists that end up only doing the dilation, which is then billable. Many times it is included in another procedure as it is simply discovered during the cystoscopy the urologist is performing.
