There's currently a debate amongst our coders/auditors on how this coding tip should be interpreted. I've included the coding tip below.

The coders interpretation of this is that when the CKD is unspecified N18.9, E11.2_ cannot be coded with N18.9 as stated above. Therefore, the coders are using E11.9 & N18.9 due to that coding tip. However, the auditors take is that the E11.2- should be reported and not report the N18.9. However, when reviewing this coding guideline listed for E11.2_, it clearly states to use the additional code of N18.1 - N18.6 which still excludes the N18.9.

I would use E11.22. (I should add that if possible, I'd query the provider for the stage of CKD.)

The Use Additional Code N18.1 - N18.6 is to give additional specificity to the stage of CKD, when available. N18.9 doesn't provide any further specificity about the stage, which is why you wouldn't code it along with the E11.22.


Also note that the N18 category has a Code first note for diabetic chronic kidney disease. This Code First note applies to N18.9 as well:
