Is the cryotherapy of SKs that are not inflamed covered by Medicare? We do not currently bill Medicare for these services. After reviewing our LCD it looks as if the dx code 702.19 is covered. I am somewhat confused as it also states that benign lesions are not covered. Can anyone help? Should we be getting an ABN and billing the patient?

the LCD is different for every state. For New York it's covered if billed with a secondary diagnosis code like itching, infected, irritated, etc, to show medical necessity. If they audit the chart and do not see medical necessity I would think they'll recoup the payment if they paid.

Look at your LCD list. If 702.19 is in your 1st Dxs list than its covered by itself otherwise
It should include a DX from list #2 or list#3.

Every state is differ. The Dx should be covered but the treatment is not.
The provider can dx a patient with it and be covered but to treat a non symptomatic sk would be cosmetic. Get an ABN and charge the patient.
