We are trying to make sure that we code to the highest level of specificity and get the most reimbursement, as well as trying to code correctly.

My question is... If a patient presents to the emergency room and is found to be a code stemi.. Can the physician bill a critical care code for the time spent with the patient prior to presenting to the cath lab, or should we continue to bill a high level admission code?

You would have to make sure elements of critical care are met. Did your physician document and provide at least 30 minutes of critical care to the patient? He must be focused on the critically ill patient. For more requirements read pgs. 23-24 of CPT professional edition.
