I have been trying to obtain the criteria for coding malnutrition. BMI is one criteria with other clinical diagnoses influencing code selection. Can anyone help here?

The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) guidelines recommend that the diagnosis of adult malnutrition be based on the presence of two or more of the following characteristics1:• insufficient energy intake;• weight loss;• loss of muscle mass;• loss of subcutaneous fat;• localized or generalized fluid accumulation; and• diminished functional status as measured by hand grip strength

I just finished reading a few articles that suggested that obesity and malnutrition are not mutually exclusive. Can the codes for both reside in the same chart/episode of care?
