Does anyone have a good description of this code and how it is used? I have a Behavioral health provider who wants to charge it with every E/M visit they have. I often cannot distinguish between the E/M visit and the psych therapy given.

90833

In order for the provider to code 90833, he or she must have it as a separately identifiable service. The time of psychotherapy needs to be documented in the note since this is strictly a time-based code. It also helps if the providers create a separate section that documents the time and type of psychotherapy provided.
