I have a visit/service that I am having trouble with. The doctor met with the parents of a child with a serious heart condition (pediatric cardiologist). He spent 50 minutes reviewing results from recent testing, as well as the outcome of their surgical conference. He explained in detail the child's heart problems, as well as going over the recommended catheterization and heart surgery including possible problems and complications. He also went over the scheduling process and blood needs. The patient was not present.

Can this service be billed? Any input would be appreciated.

This is carrier preference or driven issue and debated often here in the forums. Most carrier's to include Medicare require the patient to be present for face-to-face encounter for a portion of the visit at least.

There is CPT code for family counseling therapy in the Psychiatric section of the CPT manual.
