Trying to see if any other offices do in house drug screens and bill for them for patients on controlled substance agreements. If so what billing information can you provide or what system you use to test them.

we are an urgent care and do rapid testing however I don’t know if this suits the requirements.
Thanks in advance!

Rapid testing (point of care cup) is notorious for being wrong, so we stopped doing them. So I would not recommend it. We collect urine and send it out to a lab.

Yeah we normally do that now with lab confirmation. Just wanted to see if there was a system out there that we could do in the office and bring in that revenue for the practice.

When we were doing rapid cups, it was 80305QW. You have to have a clia waiver to bill.

Here's the problem though, if you aren't going to take any action based on the cup result, AND/OR you are going to send them all out for confirmation anyway, then there is no reason (no medical necessity) to do the rapid cup. Medicare and insurance companies tend to frown on doing things without medical necessity.

If you do the rapids, then you cannot routinely send them all out to the lab for confirmation.

If you do the rapids, then you have to take action based on the result. If they show positive for something they're not supposed to, then you have to hold prescriptions until you get confirmation back from the lab (for example).
