Patient is seen in the ER for Consult/NP, it has been billed as an outpatient with the POS 23. The physician's wife is stating that it was billed incorrectly as "most" of the patients seen in ER are admitted. If a patient is seen in the ER how would you bill it? If the patient is admitted how would you bill it? Thank you for any assistance.

Admission

If a patient is admitted as a result of of an E/M performed in another place of service (clinic, office, ER, etc) CPT specifically instructs you to code ONLY the initial hospital visit. (You can use all the work performed to satisfy your level of service as long as there is linkage between the notes.)

Hope that helps.
