Can the same provider bill a new patient E/M if he or she has previously performed only an EMG/NCV test on a previous date of service?? Or would it be considered an established patient? Thank You

I think if your provider had not previously consulted or evaluated the patient but performed only tests/procedures such as EMG/NCV, then he/she can bill the patient with new pt visit

With Regards,
Dr. Jemimah, CPC

If the provider had only done the NCV portion of the test previously, which does not require direct face-to-face contact between the physician and patient, he would be eligible to charge a new patient E/M service now. But if he had done the EMG, which does require direct face-to-face contact, then he cannot charge a new patient visit now...will have to be established.

Hope this helps!

Part of performing electro diagnostic testing is a face to face evaluation to confirm medical necessity for testing. If referred for right upper extremity test, the doctor should evaluate bilateral arms to determine a baseline. The Dr. will possible compare left to right to determine severity of right arm issues in the testing.
