I have a physician that began a colonoscopy, but had to discontinue the procedure due to poor prep. The next day the physician successfully performed the colonoscopy on the same patient. How should the first colonoscopy be coded, if at all?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

If I reported it at all, I would add a 53 modifier. I probably wouldn't bill it though - poor prep is not an extenuating circumstance that the payer should be liable for.

I totally agre with Brandi. If the physician insists then append the 53 modifier. Make sure you have good documentation.
