Our physician saw a pt in hospital to do a colonoscopy. It was determined that her heart rate was too low and she was connected to monitor with PACs noted. Decision was made to hold off and not proceed with colonoscopy until after consult with a cardiologist. Can our physician get paid for this visit and how would it be coded? He has a written form showing that he did exam but has not yet dictated. Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this would be what you are looking for, but under Appendix A section of CPT book it give description of modifier 73/74.

Modifier 73 - discontinued out-patient hospital/ASC procedure prior to the administration of anesthesia

Modifier 74 - discontinued out-patient hospital/ambulatory surgery center procedure after administration of anesthesia.

You may want to read the description of these modifiers. These could be what you are looking for.

Modifier 73 and 74 are for facility use only. The physician equivalent is the 53. However the note must show that the patient was in the procedure room where the procedure was planned to be performed when the decision to cancel was made. If the patient was in a pre op area when the decision was made then you bill a visit level with the 22 POS.

This happens in our ASC and we don't bill anything. If the patient was given sedation and scope wasn't inserted then we charge the facility charge only.
