2017 changes included changing the statement 'with pt and/or family member' to 'with patient'. Psych Coding alert indicated only F2F time with the pt can be billed after this change.
How are you handling this type of scenario with Individual Psychotherapy -
Therapist meets with pt's mother for 20 minutes while pt is in the lobby. Then the pt. comes in and participates in therapy for 30 minutes.
Since Individual Psychotherapy time is based on the F2F time with the patient, would you only bill 90832? Family therapy without pt present doesn't apply because 26+ minutes wasn't spent with the mother.
CPT book says "times are for face to face services with the patient and may include informants. The patient must be present for all or a majority of the service."
Does anyone have official resources about this? Can I count the 20 minutes with mom and bill 90834?
