My provider(family practice) saw our patient in the hospital who was seen by another for a post op wound infection due to her panulectomy, that code would be 998.59 but it states to use additional code to identify infection. I looked at hospital records via online & there is no notation of type of infection ei... staph, strep..there was a blood culture done at the hospital but nothing grew in the time she was there. Is this what they are looking for? Since nothing is noted in records what would you use in this case for the DX?

Well if nothing grew and there is no notation of an actual infection, perhaps it is better coded as a non-healing surgical wound 998.83?

Aren't you saying that it is post op infection as in possibly cellulitis? If so, you wouldn't be looking for a blood culture as that would be determining sepsis. Query the MD to be certain. Most likely, it is postop infection and cellulitis 998.59 and 682.2...many times cellulitis does not have the organism specified.
