What E/M is used when a patient presents to a Specialist? Are office consults 9924X legitimate in this case? My thoughts were that consults are not done in office settings. This visit is a hospital outpatient setting. Thank you.
The coding instructions prior to the 9924x codes state: Office or Other Outpatient Consultations. It then gives a paragraph describing the use of the codes "The following codes are used to report consultations provided in the office or in an outpatient or other ambulatory facility, including hospital observation services, home services, domicillary, rest home or emergency department........."
Therefore you can use this code (as long as the insurance company recognizes it) in any outpatient setting.
