I understand if the provider is not treating, managing, or modifying anything related to an illness you do not code for the illness. Ex: Parkinson's patient has diabetes but we do not manage the patient's diabetes only parksinsons we do not code for diabetes. The parkinsons is unrelated to the diabetes and we do not code the diabetes. If a patient is seen for Parksinsons but it is noted in the chart the patient is HIV+ and asymptomatic I understand you are to code the parkinsons primary and then asymptomatic HIV. My provider wants to know the rationale for coding the HIV when we do not manage the disease and the parkinsons is unrelated. Any help would be appreciated. What am I missing?
