If the provider mentions "obesity" in the Problem List on the Prenatal Flowsheet, would you replace the V20.1 with the complication affecting pregnancy code? I am under the impression that unless the provider states in the visit note that the condition is a "complication", it is not coded. Please help with any documents that explain this.

Hi Sandra,

First, V20.1 relates to the care of an infant; you would use V22.x (depending on which pregnancy).
You are correct that unless a 'problem' is documented as a complication, it is not to be used. You may want to query the provider as to whether the obesity is considered problematic and code accordingly, using the OB guidelines from the ICD-9 to support your request.

Coding from the Problem List

Thank you for responding. It has been my understanding that a problem listed should be coded only if it is currently manifesting in a complication mentioned in the visit note. I appreciate the confirmation as I am new to Ob/Gyn coding.
