Our facility has been using two codes sets for reflux mapping for venous insufficency
93970 & 93965 bilateral or 93971 & 93965 unilateral
It was explained that the 93970 & 93971 are codes that study the veins for DVT and that 93965 is the component that actually maps the veins with maneuvers. My confusion is when the study is unlilateral. Can you still use code 93965 for a unilateral study even though the description states Noninvasive physiologic studies of extremity veins, complete bilateral study? Would a modifer be used to indicate that this is a unilateral study or is there another code that could be used in this case? I am uncomfortable using the code for a unilateral procedure.
Is there some literature on this study?
