Please advise on the correct diagnosis coding "route" to take for this type of situation: A patient was seen at the physicians office earlier for a superficial injury to face. The patient is now presenting to the ED for a complication of the dressing. Would the superficial injury and corresponding E-codes be used even though that is not why the patient came to the ED.

No you would probably use a complication of the procedure code, or a complication of the injury, it is hard to say without the documentation. However once the initial injury has been treated you no longer code the acute injury code.
