on most job sites I see positions for these 3 types of coders. can anyone expand on the difference?

It's a job description tier based on experience, certification and other internal factors. There are no 'standardized' job descriptions that have levels of expertise that I'm aware of--the levels are determined by the facilities themselves. Usually the lower the number, the least amount of experience you need. I see these tiers most commonly in the facility setting, as opposed to professional-coding job descriptions, with Coder I being the staff that appends diagnosis codes to outpatient charges, and Coder III being the inpatient coders who abstract the DRG and code the inpatient procedures.
