Wiki chorionic villi

POC is "products of conception." Chorionic villi come from the chorion surrounding the embryo and project to eventually form the placenta. This is most likely a missed abortion, spontaneous abortion, or incomplete spontaneous abortion - all of which are equivalent in lay terms to a miscarriage. It could also be from an induced or therapeutic abortion or even an ectopic pregnancy. You will need the clinical information for the correct code. What was provided?

Hi
Thanks for your help
Clinical info :
634.91

I would go with 634.91 (Spontaneous abortion incomplete without complication) as the clinic provided. This likely means that the patient had signs/symptoms of the spontaneous abortion such as bleeding or pain, the pregnancy was diagnosed as non-viable, and the retained products of conception were removed from the uterus. 632 is "Early fetal death before completion of 22 weeks' gestation with retention of dead fetus. Retained products of conception, not following spontaneous or induced abortion or delivery." Notice "retention" meaning that likely there has been no signs/symptoms of a miscarriage/abortion such as bleeding or pain. A missed abortion is often diagnosed with an ultrasound showing an empty sac or no fetal heartbeat.

Welcome to pathology coding, Joan. This forum has been very helpful to me!
