Wiki can we bill an ov?

Pt is established. Was scheduled for tibia fx surgery this morning. It was discovered that MRI was lost so patient had to have another MRI done. Physician looked over results, went into to discuss with patient the results, spent an hour with patient, after going over results the patient decided he did not want surgery so the surgery was cancelled. Physician is asking if he can bill an OV for the hour he spent with the patient?

Since surgery was cancelled and it sounds like counseling & coordination of care I say yes.

You would have to use the E/M guidelines to code the office visit for an established patient. That will give you the correct code level.

If the provider documented total time, time counseling/ coordination of care( which must be atleast 1/2 of total time; which in this case it sounds like the total time was counseling; and the content of the counseling; you can bill based soley on time.
