My question is when the ortho doctor has a sub-specialty of sports medicine and the provider is billing under the sports medicine does the injury have to be sports related in order to bill under the sub-specialty?
No! An injury (diagnosis) is an injury regardless of how or where it occurred. The only thing that could be used to differentiate the result/injury are the External Cause Codes:
Y92: Place of Occurrence; Y93: Activity Code; and Y99: External Cause Status.
Respectfully submitted, Alan Pechacek, M.D.
