As a non-participating Medicaid provider, do we have to write off the balance on every Medicaid plan? There are many Medicaid plans in Florida now and we are not in contract with any of them. Can we bill the patient for their coinsurance?
The FL Medicaid provider handbook lists the exceptions under which a provider may seek payment from a Medicaid patient. These include if "the recipient is enrolled in managed care program and has been informed that the treating provider is not a member of the recipient’s managed care network"; and if "The provider has informed the recipient in advance that he does not accept Medicaid payment for the specific service to be rendered. The provider must document in the recipient’s medical record that the recipient was informed and agrees to the service."
