Wiki Billing for locums

Discussion was brought up at the last meeting with our hospitalists. We have 2 locums who will be filling in for two hospitalists that recently left our institution. The questions was "can we bill for the locums patients they see"? I was not sure how that worked.

Yes, per CMS Medicare claims manual chapter 12, section 30.2.11 "a physician who has left the group and for whom the group has engaged a locum tenens physician as a temporary replacement may bill for the temporary physician for up to 60 days".

Yes you bill under the locums name with the overseeing physician's NPI and a Q6 modifier on your CPT
