Wiki Billing for First Surgical Assistant

Hello,

Our office just hired a certified First Surgical Assistant and I am trying to find information on billing for her. She has her own NPI. I was thinking of using AS modifier. Does anyone know if that is correct or have any other inforamtion that can help me.

Yes, you would use AS + modifier 80, 81 or 82 depending on your situation.

You cannot bill under the provider's number unless the payer gives you instructions to do this. Surgical first assistant services are not covered by most payers and submitting the claim under the provider's number to obtain payment would be fraudulent unless the payer has guidelines that allow this.
