It is my understanding that in order to bill for both FNA and a biopsy, the FNA results must be immediately available (pathologist providing immediate interpretation of specimen) and results of the FNA must support the need of a biopsy.

(1) Is my understanding correct?
(2) In order to bill for both, is it required that the radiology report state that a pathologist was on site and include a statement regarding the immediate interpretation of FNA specimen? If not, what has to be documented to bill for both?

Any help on this issue will be greatly appreciated.

The guideline states " If the sample is inadequate to determine the diagnosis and needs further biopsy". We have been coding for both if documented properly.

Most of the documents read FNA followed by biopsy without any reason., for these cases we'll code biopsy alone.

Hope this helps...
