A 59 year old patient was admitted at 8 am thru emergency and was admitted. AT 4 pm he had Surgery OPen reduction internal fixation of olceron fracture. and open irrigation and debridement of open fracture of skin muscle tendon bone.
question- Does admission thru emergency support billing of 99140

No, admission through the emergency department with a surgery 8 hours later does not support 99140. If the patient came in with an issue that required them to immediately rush them off to surgery without being able to properly plan in advance for the procedure and anesthesia, then I would consider 99140. Guidance for this code states 'An emergency is defined as existing when delay in treatment of the patient would lead to a significant increase in the threat to life or body part.'
