Hello,
We had a patient who had a C/S 10/21/22, she had postpartum hemorrhage and returned to the OR 10/27 and again 11/2/22. The doctor did suction D&C and then placed Bakri Balloon.
I know for the Bakri Balloon I have to use 59899, 78. would you compare this to 58300?
For the suction D&C, would I use 59160, 78? I was conflicted about this code as no suction is used here.
Thank you!

If I had to pick a comparison code the the Bakri, I would go with 57103 (insertion of bladder catheter, complicated). In the facility setting 58300 has only 1.49 RVUs while 57103 has 2.24. The bladder catheter balloon will require some manipulations as does the Bakri balloon. And yes, code the the PP hemorrhage D&C with 59160-78. Suction is not required for 59160 so long as the uterine lining is scraped at some point during the procedure.

Thank you, Nielynco, for your quick response. 57103 is invalid CPT. Did you mean 51703?- Insertion of temporary indwelling bladder catheter; complicated (eg, altered anatomy, fractured catheter/balloon) :) Just to add, that at our physician's practice, we compare it to 58300 but I am interested in a higher RVU. Great discussion!

Yes, sorry, typing errors are so much fun. I meant 51703.
