Looking to find a consensus as to how many patient records a coder should be able to do in an 8 hour day.
Anesthesia only EHR

What is your opinion?

That's a difficult one to answer. My first coding position required us to only enter ASA codes into a billing system (no CPT), and I was only able to code about 50 per day from handwritten 3 page anesthesia records. We also entered providers, their start/stop times & other information.

Now, with over 10 years of experience, I code 200-250 per day in various systems including electronically writing on charts. I only code for most clients with only one requesting other information entered (ie, MRN, etc).

All in all, it depends on what needs to be entered, the type of system used, the documentation provided (ie, only anesthesia records, op reports or both) and skill level. For coders first starting out, I would focus more on accuracy. Quality is more important than quantity. Quality also improves with regular auditing and continual education. I hope this helps.
