Some, if not all, of our Medicare patients that come in to have their cochlear implant(s) programmed; receive counseling/professional advice from our Audiologists. We have billed 99211 on a few of our Medicare patients. Medicare denied the 99211 and placed to the patients responsibility. PR170: Payment is denied when preformed/billed by this type of provider. My question, is it appropriate for us to have these patients review and sign an ABN informing them Medicare will not cover the service ? Or should we be billing the 99211 at all for these audiology services ? Part of me says it's ok since Medicare has placed this to the patients responsibility and not a contractual adjustment. Any advice and/or references/links on this issue is appreciated.
