One of our surgeons thinks there is a modifier that can be added to surgery charges if a patient is on blood thinner that will increase our payment by 10%. I am unaware of any such modifier and can't find anything when I research this either. Is anyone aware of any such modifier?

My guess is he was incorrectly informed that a -22 modifier is warranted because the blood thinners would make it a more complicated than normal case.

I do not agree

We can add modifier 22 to the original procedure code billed. But the medical record should have the adequate information about achieving the hemostasis intraoperatively. Usually the payers will request for additional medical records to process a claim with modifier 22, the medical record should substantiate the reason for which mdifier 22 was added to the claim.
