What exactly is the difference between and anterior nasal hemorrhage and a posterior nasal hemorrhage? How do I tell the difference for coding?

The difference is the location or bleed site within the nose. The easiest way to determine anterior from posterior is where the bleed is draining:

Anterior is generally a bleed that drains out the nose and a posterior bleed is one that bleeds down the back of the throat.
Most common type of nose bleed is anterior.
Hopefully the provide is noting the source of the bleed in their records but this will help with determining if not noted specifically.

Anterior = Nosebleeds coming from the front of the nose, (anterior nosebleeds) often begin with a flow of blood out one nostril when the patient is sitting or standing.

Posterior = Nosebleed can begin high and deep within the nose and flow down the back of the mouth and throat, even if the patient is sitting or standing.
