We are about to bill for a new group... who seem to think we can bill an e/m for the standard preop eval if it was done over 72 hours before the procedure.. as a standard practice. I said absolutely not.. to me that Is outright unbundling. Because the visit would be the pre anesthesia eval and not done for a separate unrelated illness. Just had to share this silliness.
 
Preop evals are part of the anesthesia service. Check out the 7 steps of medical direction.

My issue is that this new group thought if they do the preop eval super early, let’s say 4 days before the surgery, they could bill separately. Which I totally do not agree with because it is still the already included preop eval, regardless of how many days before the surgery it is done.
