Which is the appropriate code to use when a consulting physician sees a patient prior to the patient being admitted to the hospital ? Example: Specialist MD is asked to consult on a patient, then after consulting, the specialist consultant asks that a Hospitalist admit the patient at 10 pm. The patient is not admitted by the hospital (moved from ED to floor)until after midnight. The specialist consultant sees the patient the next day on the floor for a "follow-up." Most physicians would be unaware that the patient wasn't admitted until after midnight and would bill 99251-99255 for the initial and perhaps 99231-99233 for the follow up. However. would it be appropriate to code it as 99241-99245 for the first date and then 99231-99233 for the second date?
