Let's say a patient is 87 years old and every 6-10 weeks, she'll change positions and dislocates her prosthetic hip. Each time, it requires physician skill to manipulate that hip back in position. If a patient presents in an ED facility and is treated for a dislocation R Hip eight times over a year, at some point, the global FUD is going to be in place.

I need confirmation that it would be appropriate to charge that dislocation each time. I would think it would since a separate event each time caused it to dislocate, but I would appreciate confirmation. Thanks in advance.

Recurrent total joint dislocation-- not currently dislocated

:confused:I'm struggling with something similar. If it's not currently dislocated, I don't believe it would be appropriate to use 996.42. I think 996.47 would be more appropriate, but I'd love to hear some ortho coders' opinions on the matter.

Thanks!
