I have always been told that we should not use 436 in a nursing home setting. Are there time frames/rules as to what is considered late effects of? Would 434.91 be valid in a nursing home or should it always be late effects of?

Pateint's being treated in an acute care setting are coded with the acute code. Pt's being treated in an inpatient rehabilitaiton facility (IRF) will have the acute code reported as their etiologic diagnoses. Subacute settings use late effect codes to indicate residual effects of the CVA.
