can you bill two e/m services on the same date by the same physician. Example: The patient came in for treatment in the office 99214 and had a reaction and was sent to the hospital 99223. I have never billed 2 visits on the same date.
no you can not do for the physician services
it is clearly said that if the same phy provided office visit and hosp visit on the same day, it is billed as 'initial hosp' only
if the phy provided only office visit you can bill only office visit, the corresponding hosp will bill the services
if you are coding for hosp then you can bill 2 E/M visit applying mod 27
"When the patient is admitted to the hospital as an inpatient in the course of an encounter in another site of service (eg hospital emergency dept, observation status in a hospital, physician's office, nursing facility) all evaluation and management services provided by that physician in conjunction with that admission are considered part of the initial hospital care when performed on the same date of admission. The inpatient care level of service reported by the admitting physician should include the services related to the admission he/she provided in the other sites of service as well as in the inpatient setting."
