Because the codes for hip x-rays state “with pelvis when performed”, does this mean that the pelvis would count as a separate view when it is performed?

So if AP and Lateral views of right hip, AP and Lateral views of left hip WITHOUT pelvis = 4 views (73522), does AP and Lateral views of right hip, AP and Lateral views of left hip WITH pelvis = 5 views (73523)?

Thank you!

Hi. I am going to answer this from an x-ray tech's perspective (which I am). Yes, you are correct; an AP Pelvis would be the 5th view.

Here is why:

Some orthopedic surgeons will want a comparison of both hip joints on one view to help for prosthetic device planning before hip replacement surgery. That AP Pelvis view is sometimes required, just depending on the surgeon & medical device company.

I hope that helps.
I'm so glad you are an xray tech, since at our facility, we are getting a discrepancy between people in regards to bilat hip xrays. Some techs state AP and lateral views of the right and AP and lateral views of the left is a 2 view study (73521) while others are stating it is 4 views (73522). Am I correct that it truly is 4 views?
